NBA Friday Night: LeBron gets 47 Points on His Birthday, CJ McCollum 11 Threes, and More

Updated: Jan 8, 2023

Friday night was full of memorable performances, including another LeBron jaw-dropper and a CJ McCollum three-point masterclass.

LeBron scores 47 on his Birthday to Beat Atlanta 130-121

As we should expect at this point, LeBron James continues to outrun Father Time to carry the Lakers. The Hawks started off very well, outscoring the Lakers by ten points in the first quarter. However, Los Angeles came back at the end of the second and came out of halftime with an energy the Hawks couldn't match. The game was sealed with a blocked alley-oo to Clint Capela stolen by Dennis Schroder. Although it is good for the Lakers to leave Atlanta with a win, it is a bad sign that your star player needs 50 for your team to win.

CJ McCollum hits Pelicans Record 11 Threes to beat Philly 127-116

CJ McCollum helped the Pelicans hold off Philly in the fourth quarter to complete a commanding win over a Sixers team who just got their big three back in Embiid, Harden, and Maxey. New Orleans shot 48% from three on the night, lead by CJ's 11 for 16 from beyond the arc. This win further proves that New Orleans is a team to be scared of come April. Of course, not many people know what the ceiling for this Philadelphia core is, which is mostly due to limited time on the court so far. After recent reports of Harden possibly wanting to return to Houston this offseason, it seems like they have a limited time to figure out who they are as a team.

Giannis and Edwards Battle as Bucks top Minnesota 123-114

Giannis and Milwaukee continue to prove why they are still just as dangerous as their championship-winning team just two seasons ago. Giannis put up 43 points and 20 rebounds, the first player to have back-to-back 40/20 games since Moses Malone in 1982. Edwards gave his best efforts to carry a shorthanded Timberwolves team over the Bucks with 30 points and ten rebounds but ultimately came up short in the end. Minnesota led with ten minutes left in the fourth, but the Bucks quickly pulled ahead to secure the win on the night. The Timberwolves have been one of the more disappointing teams this season, with their new addition in Rudy Gobert not doing as well as they expected, and tonight doesn't show much other than the fact that they should have built more around Edwards than Towns and how he doesn't like playing center.
